contractor

contractor
One who contracts to do work for another. This term is strictly applicable to any person who enters into a contract, but is commonly reserved to designate one who, for a fixed price, undertakes to procure the performance of works or services on a large scale, or the furnishing of goods in large quantities, whether for the public or a company or individual. Such are generally classified as general contractors (responsible for entire job) and sub-contractors (responsible for only portion of job; e.g. plumber, carpenter). A contractor is a person who, in the pursuit of any independent business, undertakes to do a specific piece of work for another or other persons, using his own means and methods without submitting himself to their control in respect to all its details, and who renders service in the course of an independent occupation representing the will of his employer only as to the result of his work and not as to the means by which it is accomplished. Setzer v. Whitehurst, Ky., 339 S.W.2d 454, 456.
One who in pursuit of independent business undertakes to perform a job or piece of work, retaining in himself control of means, method and manner of accomplishing the desired result.
